Beyond: Two Souls201316 factsQuantic Dream · Sony Computer EntertainmentGame page →It was only the second video game ever selected by the Tribeca Film Festival, after L.A. Noire. On 27 April 2013 Quantic Dream screened 35 minutes of it followed by a Tribeca Talks panel with David Cage, Elliot Page, Kadeem Hardison and Eric Winter. Tribeca co-founder Geoff Gilmore called it 'a watershed moment in storytelling and media'.sony.mediaroom.comThe script ran to roughly 2,000 pages — sixteen to twenty times the length of a feature screenplay. Falcone: 'there is a way to end it, but I think a lot of players will play without ending the game or even realising that there is an ending.' There is no text, no dialogue, no waypoints and no missions — the entire story is environmental.eurogamer.netCo-op was never part of the plan. On realising they were building the same thing, the two leads combined into a single 13-person team called Black Mesa: Source.en.wikipedia.orgThe project was a direct reaction to Valve's own Half-Life: Source (2004), a bare port that carried over Havok physics and new water and lighting effects but left the original level architecture, textures and models completely untouched.en.wikipedia.orgThe word "Source" was dropped from the title because Valve privately asked the team to remove it, to stem confusion over whether the project was an endorsed or official product - which, at that point, it was not.en.wikipedia.orgGabe Newell said that a complete fan-made Source remake of Half-Life was "not only possible... but inevitable."en.wikipedia.orgThe mod changed engines mid-development: it began on the Source build shipped with Counter-Strike: Source in 2004, then migrated to the 2007 Orange Box build to gain advanced particle effects, hardware-accelerated facial animation and multi-core rendering.en.wikipedia.orgModDB voters named Black Mesa the top unreleased mod in both 2005 and 2006, then handed it honorable mentions in the same category every year from 2007 to 2011 - it polled so strongly that ModDB ruled previous winners ineligible to take the category twice.moddb.comAfter missing a publicly announced 2009 target the team abandoned release dates entirely in favour of "when it's done", and Wired put Black Mesa on its Vaporware of the Year list two years running, in 2009 and 2010.en.wikipedia.orgTeam member Carlos Montero later explained the collapse of the 2009 date bluntly: the team "ended up busting our asses to make that a reality, and we went against a lot of our core values in the process. We found ourselves rushing things, cutting things, making quality sacrifices we did not want to make."polygon.comThe free mod finally launched on 14 September 2012 with every Half-Life chapter except Xen, and it was not a standalone executable - players had to install the Source SDK Base 2007 in order to run it.kotaku.comThree days before that release, on 11 September 2012, Black Mesa became one of the first ten titles ever greenlit on Steam Greenlight, alongside Cry of Fear, McPixel, Project Zomboid, Kenshi and No More Room in Hell.engadget.comThe 2012 mod scored 86/100 on Metacritic from nine reviews, with critics repeatedly comparing its polish to an official Valve product.metacritic.comBlack Mesa won ModDB's Mod of the Year 2012 outright, beating DayZ into second place and Cry of Fear into third in an awards round that drew more than 133,000 votes.moddb.comGoing commercial was Valve's idea, not the team's. Valve approached Crowbar Collective around 2013 suggesting a paid release so the team could license the full Source engine - which was also the only way to get official Linux and macOS support - and the retail go-ahead was reported on 20 November 2013.gamedeveloper.comThe free version was never taken down: it remained available and updated alongside the paid release, which the studio framed as "simply an option for players to support the team."gamedeveloper.comXen, roughly a one-hour section in the original Half-Life, was rebuilt into about four hours of Black Mesa - and project lead Adam Engels said it consumed about as much development time as the other 14 chapters combined.gamedeveloper.comEngels described the finished Xen as "roughly 4 distinct biomes across 21 maps, and about 5 hours of new gameplay."gamedeveloper.comBuilding Xen was a self-described "chicken-or-the-egg dilemma": without level design the team could not make the art assets, and without the art assets they could not design cohesive levels.en.wikipedia.orgThe complete campaign became playable start-to-finish for the first time on Steam's public-beta branch in early December 2019, adding Interloper, the Nihilanth boss fight and the endgame; Xen left beta for all owners on 24 December 2019.pcgamesn.comBlack Mesa 1.0 shipped on 6 March 2020, roughly two weeks before Valve's own return to the series with Half-Life: Alyx. Engels said the timing was entirely unintentional, and that Alyx's hype ended up boosting interest in the remake.en.wikipedia.orgAbout 50 volunteer developers cycled through the project across roughly 16 years; by completion Crowbar Collective was around 20 part-time and contract developers, distributed globally and working remotely long before that was normal.gamedeveloper.comThe team's guiding question was literally "How would Valve make Half-Life if they made it today" - they studied Half-Life 2's level-design grammar and retrofitted it, for example introducing a mechanic in a harmless space before testing the player with it somewhere lethal.gamedeveloper.comComposer and audio lead Joel Nielsen joined in June 2005 and is one of the very few original members who lasted the entire development cycle - despite having had no prior audio or music-production experience when he started.store.steampowered.comBlack Mesa contains a deliberate nod to Aperture Science's long-fall boots from Portal. Engels confirmed it as a "head nod", reasoning that Aperture "could have got a government contract for high agility boots" - a wink at Black Mesa's in-fiction rival lab, referencing a game that did not exist until nine years after Half-Life.gamedeveloper.comThe free Definitive Edition, known internally as "Black Mesa 1.5", launched on 25 November 2020 as the game's last major update, reworking the non-Xen chapters up to Xen's standard with new models and textures, dynamic lighting, repositioned enemies and rebalanced health and ammo placement.kitguru.netDario Casali, a designer on every Half-Life game, said that while researching for Half-Life: Alyx he got five hours into a replay of the original Half-Life, thought "what are you doing? Just go play Black Mesa", and restarted in Black Mesa instead.pcgamer.comA fan who modded the mod ended up hired by it: Chon Kemp built Surface Tension Uncut, a map pack restoring areas the team had cut, then joined Crowbar Collective, rose to lead level designer, and saw a heavily updated Surface Tension Uncut folded into the official game in May 2016.rockpapershotgun.comCrowbar Collective deliberately did not remake Half-Life's Hazard Course tutorial, reasoning that Half-Life 2's HUD hints had made it obsolete - so a separate five-person fan team spent roughly four years building Black Mesa: Hazard Course anyway, writing a 45-page script across six maps.gamedeveloper.comIn April 2021 Crowbar Collective published a playable "Xen Museum" on the Steam Workshop - an interactive time capsule with a Jurassic Park-style lobby, a gallery of unused assets and never-before-seen maps, documenting over five years of Xen iteration from barren toxic-green wasteland to overgrown alien world.pcgamer.comDeathmatch multiplayer arrived with the May 2015 Early Access build using remade Half-Life maps; the shipped game carries 10 multiplayer maps alongside its 19-chapter campaign, 50 achievements and closed captions in 30 languages.store.steampowered.comIn March 2022 Noclip released a two-hour documentary about the game, "Black Mesa: The 16 Year Project to Remake Half-Life."crowbarcollective.comFor the game's tenth anniversary on Steam, Crowbar Collective shipped a May 2025 update named "Resonance Decade" - dozens of performance and stability fixes plus Steam Deck improvements - and cut the price to an all-time low of $1.99.pcgamesn.comCrowbar Collective outlived the mod that created it: on 11 November 2024 the studio announced Rogue Point, a four-player rogue-lite tactical co-op shooter published by Team17.crowbarcollective.comRead 30 more facts

Smilebit switched to inline skates "due to the legs having to be fixed" on a board.en.wikipedia.orgSmilebit was the Panzer Dragoon team - the studio was formed from members of Sega's Team Andromeda.en.wikipedia.orgA real graffiti legend drew for it: Eric Haze, who designed album art for the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, contributed in-game graffiti and designed the game's logo.en.wikipedia.orgThe North American rename was legal, not creative - "Jet Grind Radio" exists because of a US trademark conflict over the words "Jet Set".en.wikipedia.orgYou could upload your own graffiti to the internet in the year 2000: the in-game Graffiti editor let players design tags and trade them via the Dreamcast VMU through Sega's official website.en.wikipedia.orgMost-nominated, zero wins: at the 4th Interactive Achievement Awards in March 2001 it led the entire field with eight nominations - including Game of the Year - and won none of them.en.wikipedia.orgJapan got the Western version back as a separate product: De La Jet Set Radio, sold through Dreamcast Direct, folded in the PAL soundtrack, two extra stages and eased difficulty - and pre-orders came with a Beat-themed T-shirt.segaretro.orgThe artist wasn't happy about the localisation. Chief graphic designer Ryuta Ueda said the Western changes diminished the game's essential Japanese elements.en.wikipedia.orgLicensing has been eroding the soundtrack for 25 years: the 2012 HD ports dropped "Yappie Feet" and "Many Styles", and the official 2000 soundtrack CD contains none of Deavid Soul's tracks at all.vgmonline.netWestern versions added Rob Zombie's "Dragula (Hot Rod Herman Remix)", Mix Master Mike's "Patrol Knob" and Jurassic 5's "Improvise" - and IGN singled out the Rob Zombie additions as the weak point of the localised soundtrack.en.wikipedia.orgComposer Tomonori Sawada is credited under the alias "Toronto", and Hideki Naganuma has publicly joked and deflected about who Toronto actually is.browniehideout.wordpress.comA critical smash that barely sold: Metacritic 94 on Dreamcast, with IGN at 9.6 and GameSpot at 9.0 - yet it moved under 40,000 units in its first Japanese week and only passed a million lifetime across every version and re-release combined.segaretro.orgTwo sequels died before the revival: Kuju Entertainment pitched a Wii Jet Set Radio that Sega passed on, and in 2017 Dinosaur Games built a proof-of-concept called "Jet Set Radio Evolution" that Sega declined.en.wikipedia.orgSega finally revived it at The Game Awards on 7 December 2023, announcing a new Jet Set Radio as part of a legacy-IP initiative alongside Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Shinobi.gamespot.comComposer Hideki Naganuma left Sega in 2008 and ended up scoring the game's spiritual successors - Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Lethal League Blaze and Hover. After Jet Set Radio he had been reduced to voice editing and sound effects on the Yakuza series.superjumpmagazine.comTwo design decisions came from practical problems: the fixed camera was deliberate anti-motion-sickness engineering, and grinding was added specifically so players could move fast without running into collision problems.en.wikipedia.orgSega delisted it. The Steam version was pulled on 6 December 2024 as part of a purge of more than 60 Sega Classics titles; existing owners keep access, but it can no longer be bought.store.steampowered.comRead 17 more facts
