Black Mesa is a re-envisioning of Valve Software's classic science fiction first person shooter, Half-Life. Powered by Source Engine, You will re-visit the inaugural role of Gordon Freeman and his memorable journey through the Black Mesa Research Facility. No development budget, funding figure or copies-sold number has ever been disclosed. Black Mesa was built by volunteers from 2004, released free in 2012, and only went commercial in 2015 after Valve approached the team about licensing the full Source engine; the revenue-split terms with Valve were never made public. Valve listed Black Mesa in its official Steam Top 20 New Releases for March 2020 (ranked by revenue) but publishes no unit numbers. The widely-circulated "3.5 million copies / $42M revenue" figures trace to a single now-dead aggregator page and could not be verified; SteamSpy's 2-5 million owner range is an algorithmic third-party estimate.
