Artwork 12Wolfenstein: The New Order is an action-adventure shooter game played from a first-person perspective. It is the semi-sequel to 2009's Wolfenstein, however utilizes very little from the game and drops any direct references to veil or supernatural. To progress through the story, the player battle enemies throughout levels. The game utilizes a health system in which players' health is divided into separate sections that regenerate; if an entire section is lost, the player must use a health pack to replenish the missing health. In combat, a cover system can be used as assistance against enemies. The player have the ability to lean around, over, and under cover, which can be used as a tactical advantage during shootouts and stealth levels. The game gives the player a wide variety of weapon options—they can be found on the ground, retrieved from dead enemies, or removed from their stationary position and carried around.
No development budget was ever disclosed by Bethesda or ZeniMax (ZeniMax acquired MachineGames in November 2010; development ran roughly three years). The figures above are chart-derived (GfK Chart-Track / NPD) rather than publisher-disclosed, which is why this is flagged as an estimate. Chart record: first Wolfenstein game ever to top the UK all-format chart, taking 25% of all games sold and 36% of all revenue in launch week; second-biggest UK launch of 2014 behind Titanfall, split 38% PS4 / 31% Xbox One; 22nd best-selling UK game of the full year; 4th best-selling US game of May 2014 and 7th of June (NPD); over 11,000 units in Japan's first week. Steam peaked at 11,808 concurrent players in May 2014 and SteamSpy estimates 2-5 million Steam owners — an estimate, not a disclosure. Launch price $59.99 is inferred from Steam price history rather than a 2014 press release. The game's reception and sales are credited with reviving the series and leading to Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, though Jerk Gustafsson has said a trilogy was already planned during the first game's development.
