Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is a real-time strategy game set in the high fantasy world of Azeroth. Players control one of four factions, the Human Alliance, Orcish Horde, Night Elves, or Undead Scourge, each with unique units, structures, and hero characters that gain experience and abilities through combat. The single-player campaign follows a sequential narrative across four faction-specific chapters. Multiplayer is supported through Battle.net with ranked matchmaking. The game includes a World Editor that allows players to create custom maps and scenarios, which gave rise to influential community creations including the mod Defense of the Ancients.

Blizzard has never disclosed a development budget. Sourced sales: 4.5 million copies prepared for the initial launch shipment in June 2002, one million sold in the first month (then the fastest-selling PC game ever, beating Diablo II), roughly 4.4 million shipped to retail in total, and one million US copies worth $49.4 million by August 2006, making it the seventh best-selling US computer game of 2000-2006. Estimated gross ~$250M (4.4M units x a ~$57 street price, the midpoint of the $55-60 range Macworld reported at launch); Blizzard never published an official MSRP, so this uses a reported street price and excludes discounts, bundles and the platform's cut. Not official.
