Riven: The Sequel to Myst is a graphic adventure puzzle game developed by Cyan and released in 1997. It continues the story of Myst, following the player’s journey to rescue Atrus’s wife, Catherine, from a decaying world. The game features pre-rendered environments with complex, interconnected puzzles and minimal direct guidance. Its visuals, sound design, and world-building were praised for their depth and realism. Riven expanded on Myst’s narrative and gameplay scale, becoming one of the most acclaimed adventure games of its time.

Development ran from 1993 for more than three years — Vander Wende planned two and it took three and a half — at a reported cost of US$5-10 million, more than ten times what Myst cost. That is a range rather than a disclosed figure, so treat it as an estimate. Sales are exceptionally well documented for the era: best-selling US computer game of 1997; over 1 million units and $46.2 million domestic revenue by April 1998; more than 1.5 million within a year of release; over 4.5 million by 2001, making it the franchise's second-best seller. The Myst series as a whole passed 12 million copies by 2003, with Myst itself above 6 million — it was the best-selling PC game from 1993 until The Sims overtook it in 2002. The game currently sells for $5.99 on Steam.
