Populous is a real-time strategy game where the player takes the role of a deity influencing the development of civilizations. You shape terrain, guide followers, and use natural disasters like floods, volcanoes, and earthquakes to influence or eliminate opposing tribes. The game features an isometric perspective and includes 500 levels (worlds), each with different challenges. Originally developed by Bullfrog and designed by Peter Molyneux, it is considered one of the earliest examples of the god-game genre.
About the Game
Go to Steam PageMove mountains, part the seas, and lead mortal armies to victory in Populous. Take on the powers of a mighty deity and battle for supremacy against an enemy god, using thoughtful strategy to shape the isometric world and the fate of its people. From the minds that brought you Black & White and Fable comes the game that defines “divine intervention.”
Key features:
- Transform the world with your godly might. Use divine magic to create a perfect homeland for your followers, control storms, or plant a volcano right in your rival’s backyard.
- Test your strategic skills. Winning this war takes more than numbers — you’ll have to know how to use them. Think quickly to give your armies an advantage, outsmart your rival, and become the most powerful god in all the land.

Business
Budget reported as £20,000 by Computer Gaming World (August 1989). Estimated gross: 4 million copies at the £24.99 Amiga launch price would be roughly £100 million at full retail, but this is a very rough upper bound only - sales ran across a dozen platforms over twelve years, including budget re-releases and bundles, so the realised figure is certainly far lower (estimate, not officially reported). Molyneux has said the EA publishing deal was "pretty atrocious" - 10% royalties rising to 12% after a million units, with a small advance and nine-month payment delays - and separately estimated that Populous accounted for nearly a third of Electronic Arts' total revenue that year, an anecdotal recollection rather than audited financials.
