Artwork 9NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines.
No development budget figure has ever been disclosed. What is on record is Yoko Taro stating at GDC 2018 that he 'didn't have a massive budget for NieR:Automata', and in March 2017 that there was not enough budget or manpower for meaningful DLC; he has also said the first thing he considers when designing anything is the budget and the second is the schedule. Official milestone chain (shipments + digital sales): 1M (April 2017) - 2M (September 2017) - 3M (June 2018) - 4M (May 2019) - 5M (December 2020) - 6M (June 2021) - 7M (November 2022) - 8M (February 2024) - 9M (December 2024) - 10M (20 February 2026); there was never an 8.5M announcement. Square Enix formally reported in September 2017 that the game had EXCEEDED sales expectations and had strong franchise potential, and its stock hit a 17-year high on the two-million announcement; PlatinumGames has credited the game with rescuing the studio after several disappointing releases. Hard figures: $59.99 at PC launch (now $39.99), an all-time Steam peak of 23,908 concurrent players on launch day, and 152,473 Steam reviews at 86% positive. Estimated gross for the PC version alone cannot be derived reliably because the 10M figure spans PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC at different price points. Sister title NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 passed 2 million the same day and should not be merged into this total.
